In the last decades, agricultural production and food security have been under significant stress due to changing climate conditions followed by population growth and decreasing productivity. These trends in combination with socio-economic and political factors amplify threats to sustainable livelihood and well-being of the global population, especially in developing countries. The need to address these challenges leads to continuous pressure on environment and ecosystems intensifying climate change impacts. Agroforestry provides one of the types of nature-based solutions to climate change while fostering community resilience. It has proven the ability to concurrently address key environmental concerns such as land degradation and biodiversity loss, mitigate adverse effects of higher temperatures for crops, enhance the resilience of farming systems while contributing to national and regional development. Agroforestry has been found to be of critical importance to several key strategic initiatives worldwide among which are UN SDGs, Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), Aichi Targets on Biodiversity Conservation), EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, the European Union Green Deal and the African Union (AU) Agenda 2063.

It is against this Background that the "Symposium on Agricultural and Agroforestry solutions in face of climate change" is being organised.

The event organised as part of the Project " Towards Climate Resilient Farming (Des jardins partagés et d'adaptation aux changements climatiques)" (Green Garden/Jardins adaptés au climat), jointly funded by the Government of Canada’s New Frontiers in Research Fund  (NFRF) and by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinnschaft (German Research Foundation, DFG).
