The Baltic University Programme is one of the largest university cooperations in the world, with approximately 90 participating universities cooperating on education and research on sustainable development and democracy. The participating universities are situated within the 14 countries in the drainage area of the Baltic Sea. Each country has a national centre, and HAW Hamburg is BUP Associated Secretariat and National Centre in Germany. The programme is coordinated by the Baltic University Programme Secretariat at Uppsala University, Sweden.

The Baltic University Programme (BUP) strives to identify and initiate novel forms of interaction among universities and between universities and society. The main aim is to enhance strong regional educational and research communities, as well as to foster a greater awareness within the programme’s focus areas. The focus areas manifest in 10 BUP themes, which can be used as a source of information about where to collect and submit material. For each of the BUP themes, information is gathered, research networks are promoted, and educational and other materials are published. This will hopefully lead to more visibility and cooperation among researchers, teachers and students.

The BUP supports the key role that universities play in democratic, peaceful and sustainable development. The BUP aim is achieved through open and inclusive organisation, the development and provision of university courses and conferences, support for multi- and interdisciplinary research cooperation, and participation in transdisciplinary projects in cooperation with authorities, municipalities and others.
