HAW Hamburg 2030 – Daring to try something new and shaping the future
HAW Hamburg is reorganising itself with the HAW Hamburg 2030 strategic process! From 1 October 2025, there will be nine new faculties, highlighting our areas of academic focus, greater flexibility in studies and more cross-faculty cooperation.
The redesigned organisational form of HAW Hamburg, which was developed in a participatory process with university members, strengthens our future viability in teaching and research as well as our visibility and attractiveness in the metropolitan region. Since summer 2023, we have been working intensively on implementing the new structures and processes in four development areas (faculty structures; studies and teaching; research, transfer and continuing education; administration). In the summer semester of 2025, study and teaching operations as well as research projects will of course continue without interruption! HAW Hamburg is repositioning itself with the HAW Hamburg 2030 strategic process! From 1 October 2025, there will be nine new faculties for a stronger profile, greater flexibility in studies and more cross-faculty cooperation.

The university and its members have shown that they make binding decisions together in larger teams, respecting the objections and concerns of all members, discussing them constructively and developing solutions. I perceive the commitment and willingness to change to be very high.
FAQ on HAW Hamburg 2030
What are the objectives of the strategic process?
................................................................................................................................................................................................
HAW Hamburg is setting the course for change and strengthening its future viability with a view to 2030. By realigning its academic structures, the university is demonstrating an innovative profile and enabling flexible teaching programmes for a diverse student body of tomorrow. It is adapting its research structures and strengthening transfer, creating an attractive and identity-forming campus for applied sciences and increasing its visibility in the metropolitan region. The university strives for financial balance and is working on an increasingly digitalised administration.
What does the roadmap for the strategic process look like?
................................................................................................................................................................................................
The strategic process has four participatory phases:
- Initialphase (06/2023-01/2024): Preparation and design of the strategic process
- Design phase (02/2024-09/2025): Design of the new structures and processes, creation of the legal basis for implementing the changes, preparation for implementation and, in some cases, implementation of the necessary adjustments
- Transformation phase (10/2025-12/2026): Launch of the nine new faculties, successive implementation of the changes in structures and processes, development of a new structure and development plan (2027-2031), evaluation of changes and, if necessary, improvements
- Stabilisation phase (from 01/2027)
FAQ for students
What will change in my degree programme?
................................................................................................................................................................................................
Nothing will change in the summer semester 2025. Even from the winter semester 2025/2026, with nine new faculties without any further subdivision into departments, your studies can continue unchanged. The degree programmes as such will remain in the context of the strategy process and will simply be transferred to the new faculties. During the transformation phase, we will then gradually drive forward changes in the areas of studying and teaching, for example in the welcome communication for first-semester students, in the area of digitally supported teaching, learning and examinations or in the implementation of more flexible learning spaces for students.
How can I get involved?
................................................................................................................................................................................................
The new faculty councils will be elected in the summer semester of 2025. This requires committed candidates and a high voter turnout. There are also various dialogue formats organised by the Presidential Board on the strategy process, for example individually with the Vice President for Studies and Teaching, to which everyone is invited. Questions and suggestions can also be submitted to the committees via the student representatives.
When will the changes to the faculty structure come into force?
................................................................................................................................................................................................
The changes will come into force on 1 October 2025.
Will my degree programme change as a result of the new faculty structure?
................................................................................................................................................................................................
No, your degree programme, your examination and study regulations and your degree remain unchanged. The changes only affect the faculty structure.
Will I receive a new matriculation number or new access data?
................................................................................................................................................................................................
No, your matriculation number and your login details remain the same.
Will classrooms, libraries and laboratories remain at the same location?
................................................................................................................................................................................................
Yes, all locations, including classrooms, libraries and laboratories will remain.
Who can I turn to if I need support?
................................................................................................................................................................................................
If you have any questions, you can contact the faculty launch coordinator in your faculty, the Student Secretariat or the Central Student Advisory Service in the Student Centre. You will receive support there.
