Online application
You have decided on a degree course that is part of the so-called dialogue-oriented service procedure (DoSV). Using the Hochschulstart platform, this process supports universities in their admissions processes and helps avoid unfilled study places. This means that you need to register with hochschulstart.de before submitting your application over our myHAW application portal.
Current information (16 January 2025)
Registration at hochschulstart.de is no longer required for degree programmes for which the application deadline has been extended.
Steps to a successful application
Pay attention to the application deadline
................................................................................................................................................................................................
Check whether the degree course you want to apply to admits students for the winter or summer semester so that you don't miss the application deadline.
Check your higher education entrance qualification

To begin a Bachelor's degree at HAW Hamburg you need to fulfil certain formal criteria.
Check the selection criteria
................................................................................................................................................................................................
For most degree courses, whether or not you receive a place in the particular course is determined by the final grade you received for your higher education entrance qualification or by your wait time. The exact limit (numerus clausus) on the number of applicants that can be admitted is only ascertained once the ranking list has been generated based on the information (grades and wait times) from the current applications. This means that for each degree course, the numerus clausus only becomes clear at the end of each admissions process.
Note: The criteria 'achievement' and 'wait time' are evaluated separately, which means that a longer wait time does not improve the average grade.

Additional criteria
In some cases the average grade is only one of several criteria. In certain degree courses, the grades for particular subjects are weighted differently and some are not taken into account in the calculation of points.
The following Bachelor's degree courses have different selection criteria. These are outlined in detail in the admissions regulations:
Clothing Technology and Management, Admissions regulations (in German only)
Media Systems, Admissions regulations (in German only)
Media Technology, Admissions regulations (in German only)
Rescue Engineering, Admissions regulations (in German only)
Complete the HAW navigator self-test
................................................................................................................................................................................................
Do the HAW navigator self-test (in German only) for the degree course you want to apply to. This test is an application requirement for most of the degree courses. Please note your application code when you are finished.
If you want to apply to the Business Information Systems degree course, you do not need to take a self-test. Please enter the application code 'XXXX' instead.

Now you're almost finished! You just have to submit your application over our myHAW application and student portal. To do so, you first have to register. You will then receive an email with your preliminary access information and how to activate your account. Please only register once. Sometimes it takes a few minutes before you receive the activation email. Make sure to also look in your spam folder if necessary.
For the subsequent application process via myHAW it is helpful to have all the necessary documents directly at hand – for example, so that you can list your grades or particular time periods. Have your transcript, information about civilian service or a voluntary year of social service and, for example, documents about vocational training ready. You will also need your application documents as PDF files in order to upload these for the online application. Please use a PDF programme (e.g. Adobe Acrobat) to do this.
Please also have the following ready:
- The application code from the HAW navigator self-test
- Your BID and BAN from Hochschulstart
- Where necessary, additional documents such as language certificates, if these are required for your degree course (see the information on the specific course)
- For international applicants: You also need a so-called VPD (preliminary review documentation) from uni assist. This organisation checks foreign higher education entrance qualifications. Graduates of the Studienkolleg (preparatory courses for university) do not have to have their documents checked by uni assist, but they submit a copy of the transcript from the Feststellungsprüfung (university qualification exam) AND a certificate with the converted grade from their foreign educational certificates before the application deadline. Non-EU applicants also submit a CV, a statement about why they are applying, and other documents and certificates to the selection committee because there is an allocated number of places for them – unlike the case for EU applicants.
