HAW Hamburg members – employees, students and instructors – can access numerous online resources from the HAW network. This access is available at the university via WLAN or when you are not physically at the university from outside via VPN or Shibboleth.

1. VPN connection

Almost all of the e-media licensed for use at HAW Hamburg can also be accessed remotely using the VPN connection.

You can find more information about using the VPN connection here. Once you have connected to the HAW network using the VPN connection, you can search the HAW catalogue as you normally would and read full-text versions of online resources.

2. Shibboleth access

Shibboleth provides another way of accessing electronic resources. You can use your HAW account to log in, either via the Shibboleth portal at https://login.haw-hamburg.de or directly from your search in the HAW catalogue. A VPN connection is not necessary.

The HAW Hamburg libraries are open during the periods listed on the website. You can work in the libraries and use the print materials on site. You can also scan print materials in all of the HAW libraries.

Borrowing of library items is possible in all of the HAW Hamburg libraries: at the self-service checkout stations at all times during opening hours, and at the service desks when these are open. 

Returns via the automated returns shelves are possible at all times during opening hours.

You can use the HAW Catalogue to order items from other HAW libraries for pick up in your HAW library or to reserve items that are currently on loan. Both services are free of charge and are available to all library users. More information about reserving and ordering library items

Update from 6 November 2024:

On 11 November 2024 the HIBS Learning Center at Berliner Tor 5 opens for all students of the HAW Hamburg. The entire 7th floor and part of the 8th floor have been transformed into an innovative learning space and now offer flexible workstations for both individual and group work. The HIBS Learning Center also has different zones that are adapted to different working styles and forms of learning: A quiet area has been set up on the 8th floor, which is primarily intended for concentrated quiet work, while a lively atmosphere in the entrance area facilitates exchange and creative collaboration. Mixed zones create a pleasant balance between communication and quiet and offer space for alternating between intensive learning phases and relaxing breaks.

In addition to room-in-room concepts for hybrid work settings that can be used by groups or individually, the HIBS Learning Center also has a family room where students with children can find a pleasant learning environment.

The 4-person Cube and the Room 7.11 can be booked via the room booking system Anny.

Individual and group workspaces are available in all HAW libraries.

The group workspaces in Design, Media and Information (Finkenau 35), Life Sciences (Ulmenliet 20) and Social Work and Nursing (Alexanderstraße 1) libraries can now be booked online. This service is only available to members of HAW Hamburg. It is no longer possible to book the group workspaces at the counter or on paper.
