Comment: Über Sabinet ab Jahr 2000 abrufbar. This publication provides an annual and longer term review of health policy developments in South Africa. In September 1995, HST produced its first SAHR. The South African Health Reviews of 1995 and 1996 established this monitor of change in the health sector as the most comprehensive and authoritative available. The 1997 Health Review is frank in its assessment of successes and failures, but expands its scope by including a survey highlighting the realities in clinics in every province in the country. The 1998 Review concentrates on equity and attempts to highlight progress that has been made as well as identify blocks to providing equitable public sector services throughout South Africa. The focus on equity and progress toward developing a unified public health sector that is district based and underpinned by the principles of primary health care is continued in the 1999 Review. Factors hampering transformation and the achievement of equity are also highlighted.
