An international network
The Faculty of DMI has numerous contacts around the world and is continuously working to expand international partnerships and promote mobility abroad. Currently, there are nearly 60 partnerships with universities worldwide. At HAW Hamburg, you have the opportunity to prepare yourself specifically for a globally connected and dynamic professional world. International experience and partnerships are valuable components of teaching and practice in the Departments of Design, Media, and Information & Media Communication.
A stay abroad can expand your professional expertise and provide you with new methodological and social skills. You will gain fresh perspectives, get to know different teaching approaches, and deepen your language skills in an authentic environment. Furthermore, interdisciplinary learning enhances your analytical and creative abilities—valuable strengths for your personal and professional development. However, a semester or internship abroad often offers even more: it can help you build an international network, make valuable contacts for your professional future, and strengthen your intercultural skills. Many students experience it as a time of personal growth, where they face new challenges and gain a new perspective on their own surroundings.
Dare to take the step abroad – Whether you want to go abroad from Hamburg or study as a guest student for a semester with us, we are by your side and will support you!
IMPORTANT FOR DMI STUDENTS:
If you are planning an exchange semester, you should join our MS-Teams-Group: DMI_International_Outgoings | Allgemein | Microsoft Teams. There, you will receive updates and current information on events, programs, partner universities, recognition documents, schedules, deadlines, and more. Moodle is no longer active for this purpose. We also strongly recommend that you familiarize yourself with the International Office's website: HAW-Hamburg: Studium im Ausland. Most questions are usually answered there. If you still have questions or uncertainties, feel free to contact our Student Exchange Coordinator (see contact and office hours below).
IMPORTANT FOR INTERNATIONAL GUEST STUDENTS:
International guest students can find information on exchange semesters here:
HAW-Hamburg: Erasmus / Study abroad or here for degree-seeking students: HAW-Hamburg: Internationale Studierende.

Responsibilities
................................................................................................................................................................................................
In regular information sessions and through open office hours, our Student Exchange Coordinator informs interested DMI students who wish to spend a semester abroad. Additionally, future exchange students receive faculty-specific advice on potential partner universities, the application process and selection, recognition, and academic procedures.
Furthermore, the Student Exchange Coordinator also supports all international guest students during their stay at the Faculty of DMI.
On the other hand, the International Office coordinates the overall exchange, manages funding such as the Erasmus workflow, administration, and contracts with partner universities, as well as other international offerings. If students are interested in Erasmus internships, they can also reach out to the International Office.
