We aim to enable students to independently apply academic and practical methods for the development and design of motor vehicles, trains and aircraft of all kinds, as well as methods from the field of mechatronics.

The department is home to laboratories for aerodynamics, acoustics, CAD and lightweight construction, together with the automotive laboratory, the aeronautical laboratory, the aircraft systems laboratory, and the cabins and cabin systems laboratory. These labs are where – in addition to activities to supplement the department's teaching – practical research and development are conducted.

More than 100 professors, instructors, academic staff, and other employees carry out the department's teaching, research and administrative work. The department is located at the Berliner Tor Campus.
