In accordance with the Hamburg Act on Equal Opportunities for Men and Women in the Public Service (HmbGleiG) and the Hamburg Higher Education Act (HmbHG), HAW Hamburg has equal opportunities commissioners for the academic area and the technical and administrative area.
The academic equal opportunities commissioner is responsible for the professors and students.
The administrative and technical equal opportunities commissioner is responsible for the technical, library and administrative staff.

The university's equal opportunities commissioner is elected by the University Senate pursuant to Section 87 of the Hamburg Higher Education Act.
The commissioner serves as a mediating entity between HAW Hamburg employees working on women's policy issues and the administration, the central governing bodies and the departments. She is supported by the Equal Opportunities Office and other areas of the administration and the departments in her efforts to establish a cross-disciplinary network.
The equal opportunities commissioner has the following roles and responsibilities:
- Contact and support person for academic staff and students
- Participation in key university policy decisions in the area of equal opportunity
- Conceptualisation and implementation of equal opportunity measures in the academic area
- Member of the extended university management
- Advisory member of the University Senate
- Participation in development of equal opportunity plans
- Coordination and advising of the equal opportunities commissioners in the departments
- Provision of statements on all appointment processes
- Chair of the Equal Opportunity Committee
