Two sisters, one degree programme, a shared passion

Identical twins, Heshini and Oshini Jayaweera from Sri Lanka, developed a passion for mathematics and problem-solving while at school and this led them to choose engineering as a study pathway. They both study the bachelor’s programme Information Engineering at HAW Hamburg. Oshini is one semester ahead of Heshini but otherwise they share everything in their life in Hamburg as they have always done.

After completing high school, Heshini and Oshini started out on their higher education journey together and both applied to study a bachelor’s programme at HAW Hamburg starting in March 2024. Oshini was offered a place in the information engineering programme. Heshini wasn’t so fortunate, as places are limited. But she tried again the next semester and this time she was lucky. ‘We have always been passionate about mathematics, a love that developed during our school years while studying and solving problems. And this naturally led us to pursue engineering studies. Information Engineering, appealed to us as it combines theoretical knowledge and practical application, and we believe this will prepare us to confidently step into the professional world after we graduate. We chose to study in Germany because of its globally recognized reputation for engineering excellence. Our decision to join HAW Hamburg was further cemented by its excellent reputation for fostering diversity and providing a supportive environment for international students.’

For both sisters the semester apart wasn’t easy, and Oshini had to organise her first semester in a foreign country on her own. ‘To be honest, living without my sister was really hard at first. The thought of being apart for the first time felt overwhelming, but I soon realized that there were both positives and challenges to our separation. If we had stayed in the same city, our experiences and knowledge might have been more limited. However, being in different places exposed us to diverse environments, people, and perspectives. Every day, we shared our experiences with each other, essentially doubling what we learned and lived through. On a personal level, I grew into a much more independent person. I had to do my own laundry, go grocery shopping, and even cook for myself—things I had never done alone before. But despite this growth, I deeply missed my “partner in crime”. I missed our arguments, our laughter, and simply having her by my side as she has been since the day we were born.’

My sister shared her positive experiences at the university during her first semester, and her guidance gave me a clear understanding of what to expect. The first few weeks at HAW Hamburg have been an exciting blend of familiarity and new experiences.

While it was equally hard for Heshini to be without her sister at the start of 2024, she had a wonderful advantage when she started at HAW Hamburg in the winter semester 2024/25. ‘My sister shared her positive experiences at the university during her first semester, and her guidance gave me a clear understanding of what to expect. The first few weeks at HAW Hamburg have been an exciting blend of familiarity and new experiences. Thanks to my sister, I already knew lots of students across different semesters, which helped me feel welcome and integrated from the beginning. Everyone was friendly, and their support eased my transition. And on the academic front, the support from my sister made the coursework manageable. However, one unique challenge I faced was explaining to people that my twin sister and I are two different individuals, as we look almost identical.’

For Heshini and Oshini, having each other makes life as an international student easier than for lots of international students starting out on their own. But students can profit from their tips for getting off to a good start and being successful in your studies. ‘Try to build a strong network by connecting with international students and peers. You can do this by participating in the events the university offers. Networking can be incredibly helpful in both your academic and professional journey. And, if you are planning on studying an English-language degree, start learning German before coming to Germany and continue practising it once you get to Germany. Proficiency in German will open doors to better job prospects and enhance your daily interactions.’

Now, after being reunited after one semester apart, the sisters are back to sharing life and laughter and helping each other with their studies. ‘My sister is one semester above me, so she helps me with 1st semester modules, and she gets help from me for software construction. Apart from that, our passion for arduino made us buy an arduino kit and we are learning it together.’
