Aircraft Design and Systems Group (AERO)
Emphasis of AERO's work: Aircraft Design, Aircraft Systems, Flight Mechanics. AERO's aim is to guide research assistants to cooperative dissertations and to conduct projects in research, development and teaching. AERO brought 1.6 M€ to the university with finished projects. AERO guided projects worth 2.9 M€ together with it's partners.

Ecolabel for Aircraft
The "Ecolable for Aircraft" shows a rating for an aircraft with its engine type and seat layout. Based on this rating, passengers can select the most eco-friendly single flight. Furthermore, it is possible to determine the most eco-friendly flight between origin and destination that consists of no, one, or more intermediate stops. It is also possible to determine a score for the environmental performance of an airline fleet.

Optimization in Preliminary Aircraft Design (OPerA)
Aircraft design parameters like aspect ratio, sweep, taper ratio, maximum lift coefficients, fuselage diameter ... are the engineer's choice. The best combination of design parameters leading to an optimum design can be found by formal optimization. OPerA applies genetic algorithms to aircraft preliminary design and preliminary aircraft cabin design.

Airport 2030 - Evolutionary Aircraft Configurations - Possible A320 Successor
Investigation of aircraft configurations and technologies for near-term application to reduce Direct Operating Costs (DOC) accepting given airport limitations. Design and evaluation of different configurations for a Box Wing Aircraft (BWA). Design and evaluation of a large turboprop aircraft with Natural Laminar Flow (NLF) and Strut Braced Wing (SBW).

Aircraft Design for Low Cost Ground Handling (ALOHA)
Investigation of conventional aircraft designs for Low Cost Airlines (LCA). For them, ground costs at airports have a high share among Direct Operating Costs (DOC). However, a reduction of ground costs can lead to increased depreciation, fuel or maintenance costs. Therefore, it is necessary to continue to consider cruise flight.

Green Freighter (GF)
Investigations of conventional and unconventional cargo aircraft configurations for an entry into service in 2025. Main focus: Environmentally friendly and economic aircraft operation. Aircraft preliminary sizing was done with HAW spread sheets. More in depth design, analysis and optimisation was done with PrADO (Preliminary Aircraft Design and Optimisation).
